charlottedowson on: Senior 1 Termly Focus

This half term Senior One's topic is All About Me. We will be looking at self-portraits inspired by Van Gogh, Keeping healthy and fit, understanding how our body works, and the community around us. On top of this we will be reinforcing and progressing communication and thinking skills based on the specific needs of the children in our class. Swimming at Driffield Leisure Centre will take place on Tuesday mornings and P.E. lessons in the school hall will take place on Thursday afternoons. There is also a visit to the Flamborough coast planned for the 6th October.

Termly Focus - Summer Term 2021

charlottedowson on: Senior 1 Termly Focus

This is an exciting term for Senior 1. We now have all the children back at school and we are allowed out into the community again.

The Summer term main topic is ‘On the Go’. This will involve learning about different types of transport, the history of transport, practical science experiments to help us better understand transport, collecting data linked to transport and many other fun activities. We will be aiming to improve pencil control and creativity by creating art work and written work linked to the topic. In English lessons, we are still aiming to improve reading fluency and spelling accuracy through focused phonics lessons and continued regular reading. Maths will be mainly focusing on number facts, money, handling data and shapes. We will also be doing practical work on time as many children in the class need practice in this area.

We will continue to work on ‘life skills’. This will involve cooking, baking and taking part in a variety of everyday jobs and classroom jobs. P.E. lessons are now on Tuesday afternoons and there will be virtual sporting competitions to avoid mixing with other schools. On top of this we will be attending a golf driving range and putting area at County Golf in Hull.

Please do not hesitate to contact myself or school if there is anything you feel we can help with.

Termly Focus - Spring Term 2021

charlottedowson on: Senior 1 Termly Focus

This should be an exciting term for Senior 1 despite the current lockdown. We have many children in the class currently learning at home but we also have plenty of children coming into school.

The Spring term main topic is ‘The World’s Weather’. This will involve learning about different types of weather, practical experiments to help us better understand weather, collecting data linked to our weather and many other fun activities. We will be aiming to improve pencil control and creativity by creating art work and written work linked to the topic. In English lessons, we are still aiming to improve reading fluency and spelling accuracy through focused phonics lessons and continued regular reading. Maths will be mainly focusing on number facts, money and handling data. This will still involve lots of addition and subtraction and some multiplication and division when the children are ready for it. We will also be doing practical work on time as many children in the class need practice in this area. In science we will carry out practical activities linked to the weather – this will involve creative experiments and gathering data such as temperature, rain water and wind direction.

We continue to work on ‘life skills’ but this has had to change due to lockdown measures. We no longer spend time in the community (hopefully this will return before too long) but we will continue to cook, bake and take part in a variety of classroom jobs. P.E. lessons continue to be on Thursday mornings and there will be virtual sporting competitions to replace offsite visits.

We appreciate that things can be very challenging for you all at the moment due to home learning for many children and a slightly reduced school week for the children coming into school. Please do not hesitate to contact myself or school if there is anything you feel we can help with.

Termly Focus - Autumn Term 2020

charlottedowson on: Senior 1 Termly Focus

This is an exciting year for Senior 1 with lots of changes to staff and children. Some children have moved up into Senior 2 and we have new arrivals in both children and staff. Staffing now consists of me (Tom) as the class teacher and our dedicated LSAs – Sean, Mercedes, Carol, Celia, Tylem and Nigel (Mondays). We are also lucky to have additional support for a pupil through Charley and we have Andy (a trainee teacher) working mainly in Senior 1. We have enjoyed a great start to the new school after a very long summer. It is great to be back in school!

The autumn term topic is ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ with our class focus being birds. This will initially focus our attention on different types of birds, life cycles and habitats. We will be sculpting, investigating, drawing, painting and writing around this topic. In English lessons, we are aiming to improve reading fluency and spelling accuracy through focused phonics lessons and continued regular reading. We will also continue to work on handwriting and pencil control to improve writing fluency. Maths will be mainly focusing on place value and addition and subtraction. This will lead onto the use of money in practical situations.

On top of this there will be ‘life skills’ lessons involving shopping, baking, food technology and regular work on how to stay safe and how our bodies change during puberty. P.E. lessons will be on Tuesday afternoons and we will be swimming at Driffield Leisure Centre every other week on a Tuesday morning. There will also be competitive sporting events held within our school. Hopefully, there will also be a trip to Bridlington Animal Park to see some birds of prey as well as a variety of other animals.

The staff of Senior 1 looks forward to creating a safe, nurturing and engaging environment for the children to work in. If you have any questions or worries now or at any point in the school year, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Senior 1 Termly Focus - Spring 2020

charlottedowson on: Senior 1 Termly Focus

This is another exciting term for Senior 1. The Autumn term ran smoothly and we were delighted with the hard work of the all the pupils. We have had a slight change of staffing with the experienced Celia joining us four days each week whilst Jade now works in many different classes on a temporary basis.

The Spring term main topic is ‘Tell me a Story’. This will involve listening to and learning stories from around the world and so many geographical links can be made. We will be aiming to improve pencil control and creativity by creating art work and written work linked to the topic. In English lessons, we are still aiming to improve reading fluency and spelling accuracy through focused phonics lessons and continued regular reading. Maths will be mainly focusing on money and time. This will still involve lots of addition and subtraction and some multiplication and division when the children are ready for it. We will also be doing practical work on time as many children in the class need practice in this area. In science we will learn how the human body grows and changes into adulthood whilst continuing to learn about the vital roles of the internal organs.

We continue to work on ‘life skills’ and so sessions involving shopping and baking, visits to the community coffee shop and regular walks into town will continue. P.E. lessons continue to be on Tuesday afternoons and there will be trips out to sporting events.

The staff of Senior 1 take pride in creating a safe, nurturing and engaging environment for the children to work in. If you have any questions or worries now or at any point in the school year, please do not hesitate to contact me.
